Term of the Day

Furuncle: The medical term for a "boil" -- an inflammation of the hair follicles. It may develop from pre-existing folliculitis that spreads into surrounding dermis. The causative microorganism is usually S. aureus.

  1. I'm an MA working for a dermatologist, and I thought your readers should be aware that an increasing number of the boils we treat are caused by MRSA. MRSA is becoming more and more of a public health problem and is extremely difficult to treat.

  2. For those of you unfamiliar with the term, MRSA stands for methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus -- a highly antibiotic-resistant strain of staph.
